The Flagtown Fire Department was the first fire company formed in the township of Hillsborough, largest township in the county of Somerset, state of New Jersey. In 1937, seven members of the Township Board of Trade decided that Hillsborough needed its own fire company. Of these seven, George M. "Pop" Farley deserves most of the credit in getting the fire company started. On May 27, 1938, the Hillsborough Volunteer Fire Company No. 1 received its charter. That year, the department purchased its first fire truck, a used chemical engine from Dunelllen, for $475. Nine years later, they bought a surplus army fire truck that was bound for China for $1,800. the ladies auxiliary raised the $400 needed to paint the olive-drab colored truck red. In 1946, after housing the trucks in a garage at Clawson Machine Company for eight years, the membership built a firehouse for the trucks. Lumber for the building was donated by Doris Duke. The building was added to in 1956, 1967, 1989 and 2001 to meet our townships growing needs.
